Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator (Late Review)

Robert Knuckles

Time to Rock Again

Guilty Gear Xrd returns with the updated version Revelator. It’s been awhile since I’ve played a Guilty Gear game and Revelator shows the exact reason why I fell in love with this series.

Like I said before Revelator is the updated version of Guilty Gear Xrd. It introduces new and returning characters. Veteran characters return such as Johnny leader of the Jellyfish crew, Jam Kurado the kung fu chef returns as well. Jam is one of my favorites from the serious and I’m really happy she’s back in the series and boy does she look lovely. Jack-O is a new character into the guilty gear series. Jack-O wears a pumpkin shaped mask and has the ability to summon her cute ghost minions to attack opponents high and low.

Revelator gameplay is pretty much similar to Xrd. There’s isn’t really a huge difference. It’s still a very fast paced offensive fighting game. One tiny new feature is the burst overdrive which is basically a stronger version of a character's overdrive that cost a full bar of burst and half of the tension gauge which is pretty interesting. Language is set to Japanese so there's no English voice acting which some will like but I'm pretty sure there are people that like the English voice acting as well.

Now the story takes place after Xrd but players won’t be playing the story mode. They’ll basically watch an anime which can be a problem because players want to play and fight against other characters. That’s been a problem for Arc System. They rarely seem to put any fighting in a story mode. It’s a fighting game and players want to fight. Granted you still want a good story but you players to fight against the computer. Now players still have arcade mode that they can play which is actually the prequel before the actually story mode and what I found interesting is that if players aren’t familiar with the story they have a library that explains the events which is pretty cool.

The biggest feature that Revelator is the tutorial. Every tutorial in a fighting game now gives players the idea of how the game works but what impress me is that it gives players match up tutorials against characters. For example players can learn what to do on how to counter Sol’s Volcanic Viper using any character. I’ve never seen a fighting game give match up tutorials. Players can learn what to do in certain situations against certain characters. It’s absolutely amazing.

Online in Revelator is okay. They have players in lobbies where players can have up to at least 60 people and players don’t have to wait they can just use an empty arcade machine. The connection is okay some matches I get some lag or no lag it’s just random.

In the end Revelator pretty much plays the same as Xrd. The presentation is absolutely beautiful and I dare say it has to be the most amazing visual fighting game in 2016. It’s just a new story and an awesome tutorial. It’s possibly the best tutorial I’ve ever played. Now there might be some people that aren’t fans of anime games but if you’re a fighting game fan Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator is the game for you. Now it’s hard to find this game at a game store but players can buy this game online on Amazon or EBay or players can download this from the PlayStation Store.
